If you decide not to come to class after you stated a commitment to come, PLEASE email or call Tom as soon as possible. This will assure that the classes run with greater planning and organization.

A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO ATTEND ‘MEDITATION AS A WAY OF LIVING CLASS’, LED BY TOM DEST.

You walk in the room to a group of people you’ve never met, including the facilitator. You can’t speak the typical greeting of, “Hello, how are you. My name is Sue. What’s your name, because tonight’s class has a no talking rule, except during exercises, and for the occasional question. This vow of silence facilitates mental strength, two of which are: 1) Promoting communication to come from deep inside the heart. 2) Allowing a lucid display of the otherwise undetected thought waves that get in the way of heart to heart communication.

Next come instructions: “Please sit, shut your eyes, and listen intently to these prayers”. Tom proceeds to play soft meditative piano while he chants age-old sacred Indian prayers in the language of Sanskrit, immediately followed by singing their English translation. “These Mantras, which have been chanted for thousands of years, are a contemplation on our eternal nature, divine love, and keys to everlasting peace”, says Tom. The mood set by abstention from outer talk and peaceful, prayerful sounds make ready for the groups next activity.

The group chants the sacred sound of OṀ three times then sits still for a few minutes, each listening to the pulsation of their own breath. Succeeding this is a guided visualization, a story that takes one on a journey through a mystical forest with mystical animals and celestial beings, all for the reason of finding inner truth as it applies to one’s life. Tom plays his drum and piano as he narrates the story. As the visualization ends a few minutes of silence ensues, then Tom chimes in, “Now it’s time to share your experience with the group. What manifested for you? Share what happened, or what didn’t happen. Share whatever is pertinent to you as it applies to your insights from the visualization.”

After the group sharing comes an engaging story handed down by the Sages, a story strewn with deep spiritual allegories, which then leads to a discourse about their meanings, in particular ‘equanimity’. “Equanimity is essential to the science of meditation. It’s the ability to remain steadfast and loving in the midst of our ever-changing world, and our ever-changing life situations.” Regarding equanimity, Tom gives examples of some meditation techniques & tools that can be helpful in remaining serene during life’s ever changing, and sometimes challenging moments.
“It’s time to end class, but not our meditation practice”, says Tom. “To experience the inner peace we crave, then we will need to persevere with the tools learned in class by using them out there in life…within each and every situation. When we do that, then we are truly engaged in meditation as a way of living.”

Class ends with a positive, up-beat group participatory song/chant: “Om Shakti Om, Shakti Om, Shakti Om, Namo Namaste, Namo Namaste”
